The Natural/Generated Bodies
Open Call for Artists – The Wrong Biennale
PREMISE:
The Wrong Biennale is a vast decentralised art event that brings together artists, curators, institutions, and audiences through a global fair of exhibitions. Hosted both online and in physical spaces by independent curators, it presents selected digital works within pavilions and embassies worldwide. The Wrong has received wide recognition and acclaim from the international press, the art community, and the public. It has been awarded the SOIS Cultura Prize and received an honorary mention from the European Commission’s S+T+ARTS Prize. The Wrong is an institutional member of the International Biennial Association. From a New York Times article titled “What’s Right About the Wrong Biennale?” (2018): “With an audience numbering in the millions, the Wrong may be the largest art biennale in the world — the digital world’s answer to Venice. To visit, art lovers need not buy a plane ticket, book a hotel room, or queue in front of galleries: all it takes is an internet connection… The magic of the Wrong lies in the sense of discovery sparked by a single click.”
THEME:
How do we inhabit our bodies in the age of Artificial Intelligence?
What forms, boundaries, and possibilities emerge when the body is no longer only matter, but also image, avatar, data, and projection?
The perception of the body in art has been questioned and redefined over the centuries. First, it was narrated through what happened to it — in the Middle Ages, martyrs enduring pagan punishments. Later, attention turned to the inner life, to the oneiric, and with Romanticism we began representing emotions themselves, though still through reality. The avant-gardes shattered this balance, bending reality to new forms of expression. Today, technologies — and AI in particular — provide us with tools to push the representation of bodies and emotions even further.
We invite artists, performers, digital and multidisciplinary creatives to explore and interpret the body and the multiple bodies — physical and virtual — that we inhabit and traverse today.
This call focuses on five perspectives:
- The body and its multiplicities: from the biological body to the digital one; from physical to virtual spaces; from material presences to AI-simulated ones.
- Form and instrument of identity: the body as the place where we recognize ourselves and present ourselves, but also as a mutable interface, modified or generated by artificial systems.
- Bodies and identities in online communication: avatars, profiles, photos, filters, deepfakes — how we represent and disguise ourselves in chats, dating, and AI-mediated relationships.
- Relationship with one’s own body: tensions, challenges, and desires between the real and the ideal body, between who we are and who we wish to be in the hybrid physical-digital universe.
- Relationship with the other: encounters, attractions, and distances between physical and virtual bodies, between “real” and AI-simulated relationships.
IN SHORT:
- The body and multiple bodies, physical and virtual, in the age of AI.
- The body as both form and instrument of identity in the age of AI.
- Bodies and identities in virtual communications — chats, dating, online exchanges — in the age of AI.
- One’s relationship with one’s own body — real and physical, virtual and ideal — in the age of AI.
- Encounters and exchanges with others — physical and virtual — in the age of AI.
Submission deadline: October 10, 2025
TYPES OF WORKS:
We are seeking works that engage with the themes of this call, with a particular focus on those created with, or in collaboration with, AI technologies; or works that reflect on generative technologies and, more broadly, the image itself. We welcome diverse approaches to interacting with or responding to AI. We hold no predetermined expectations: AI may be your creative partner, a silent presence in the background, or the very subject of your work. Submissions are particularly encouraged in the form of images, though we also welcome videos, provided AI is part of the creative process.
EXHIBITION FORMAT:
Selected artists will automatically and freely participate in an online exhibition hosted in an interactive metaverse space, opening on November 1 and remaining accessible throughout the Biennale. Artists may also choose to participate in a physical exhibition held in Milan (Italy), at Alveare Culturale Studio(https://www.alveareculturale.it/), Via Carlo Imbonati 12, from November 1 to December 15, upon payment of a fee of €150 per artist.Throughout the exhibition period, a series of events, talks, and panels will take place, offering participating artists the opportunity to present their works and perspectives — both in person and remotely.
WHAT TO SUBMIT:
- Your name (and artist name, if different)
- Title and year of your work
- Download link for your work (via SwissTransfer, Google Drive, YouTube, etc.) — one work per artist
- Website/portfolio
- Social media channels
- Short statement (max. 300 words) on your creative process and the AI model used
- Artist biography (100–200 words)
- Any additional information (e.g., sensitive content notices, interest in physical installation)
